Paris - travel photos 3

Sometimes a quick nod is enough to ask permission to take a photograph .. and then an autofocus camera make it easy to grab the shot quickly before the subject disappears, instead of having to fiddle around with manual controls on the camera.   Date: April '93

  The
slightly
incongruous
background brings
some humour to this scene, which I quickly snapped before the man could notice me and perhaps become self-conscious.

Even though the dog watching this woman enjoying her morning coffee and newspaper is a humorous subject, the impact is reduced because they are too small in the frame. This is another photograph that works perhaps only because of the bright colours.   Date: July '86

I wanted to contrast the poverty of this woman and child with the lush painted backdrop against which she was leaning. The backdrop depicts a woman holding a child by her hand. But to include the beggar woman in the frame with the painting, I had to take the photograph from such an angle that the perspective diminished the impact of the backdrop. In the end this is another photograph that works merely because of the impact of the colours.

The breath-taking interior of the Eglise Marie Madeleine.

Here I once again used spot-metering and had a shutter-speed as low as 1 second, and managed to get a sharp hand-held photo by pressing the camera against a pew.

The Conciergerie on the banks of the Seine, bathed in floodlights.

To work out the correct exposure, I took a spot-meter reading off the evenly lit facade in the middle.
